Overview:The scope of this position is to:

  • Acquire, develop, and publish new books and course content as well as revisions of current books in assigned disciplines to meet targeted goals and strategic list plan.
  • Work in conjunction with external current and potential authors, contributing editors and freelancers, as well as internal staff including editorial assistants, assistant editors, associate editors, production, marketing and sales, art/design, IT and Contracts to accomplish acquisitions, development and transmittal tasks.
  • Responsible for hiring, development, and management of editorial assistant.
  • Set standards of professionalism and leadership in interactions with all internal staff.
  • Represent and act as Ambassador for the company externally.
  • Manage controllable costs associated with the development of new titles and revisions.
  • Perform daily work with moderate supervision from direct manager.

 Responsibilities:The essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Develop, in consultation and collaboration with the Vice President and Editorial Director/Executive Editor, a strategic editorial plan for aggressive growth of the designated list. This Plan will chart the short term and long term acquisition and development of textbooks and related course materials for the designated discipline(s) within the context of market trends and competitor activity. The plan should be reviewed and revised at the beginning of each calendar year.
  • Acquire 15-25 books annually within the specified discipline in accordance with annual signing goals set by the Vice President and Editorial Director/Executive Editor. The annual signing targets includes new book signings as well as revisions in an approximate 50/50 ratio. This includes preparation of all relevant profit and loss projections and competitor analysis along with making formal presentations of prospective new acquisitions to the Publishing Committee. This also includes contract negotiation with authors and other external parties and oversight of the preparation of book agreements.
  • Work closely and frequently with authors through a variety of media (phone, e-mail, videoconference, in person) for acquisitions, market research, development, contract negotiation, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with editorial counterpart(s) in the company’s international offices to ensure the development of a coherent and planned program globally in the designated discipline(s).
  • Manage the development of all projects under contract, not yet published, ensuring schedules are met and all projects reflect the highest quality and meet gross margin and profit targets. This includes management of controllable costs, the peer review process, manuscript revisions, permissions, contract documents, marketing database updates.
  • Transmit to production in a timely manner and with all necessary information, all manuscripts that have met the established publication criteria, in accordance with annual transmittal goals set by the Vice President and Editorial Director/Executive Editor. Prepare and provide to Marketing and Sales department necessary product and competitor information to enable Marketing and Sales to formulate effective marketing plans.
  • Provide support to Marketing and Sales in review/preparation of copy, promotional materials and sales tools.
  • Manage controllable expenses such as T&E, reviewing and development budgets, and other operational costs.
  • Travel to universities and college campuses for the purposes of commissioning new authors, performing various market research functions, and supporting sales in closing adoptions. Represent and act as Ambassador for the company externally at national/international organization conferences and regional meetings.
  • Hire, train, and supervise Editorial Assistant.

  Qualifications:Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least 3 years of book acquisition experience preferably in the text and/or reference book area with an academic or college publisher.
  • Experience supervising staff to include editorial assistant, peer reviewers and freelance editors.
  • Knowledge of educational market trends and the competitive environment, particularly within the specified discipline.
