One of the nation’s premier non-profit scholarly publishers, is seeking a talented individual to lead its acquisitions department as Editorial Director in its Chapel Hill, NC offices. The winning candidate will both acquire titles and manage the publisher's editorial team.
 
The press publishes about 100 new titles annually, many of them prize-winning scholarly and highly successful general-interest books. Some of the publisher's disciplines include African American Studies, American Studies, anthropology and US archeology, art, architecture, craft, music, the Civil War, communications, cookbooks, ecology, environmental studies, health and medicine, US history, Native American Studies, nature guides, North Carolina geography, political science and current affairs, religion, social studies, Southern studies, travel, Women’s & Gender studies and much more.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished, highly motivated, and thoroughgoing professional with a successful record of publishing important books, both for scholarly and general-interest audiences.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
* Supervise a department of 8 that includes 4 editors and 3 assistants
* Acquire a significant number of books each year
* Direct other editors to meet or exceed signing goals
* Collaborate with Production, Marketing and Sales to publish high quality books with the optimal chance for sales success
* Join the company’s senior management group as a strategic thinker
 
REQUIREMENTS:
* Superb oral and written communications skills
* Strong organizational, managerial, and planning skills
* The ability bring editorial vision and execute that vision into a winning pub list
* A proven track record of acquisition success
* Preferably some experience working in the University Press arena
* Leadership abilities that can inspire the editorial team
* Appropriate computer and database skills
* Familiarity with non-print formats
